You Are Here

You Are Here Exhibit Review

I love things that have to do with perception. The “You Are Here” exhibit at the North Carolina Museum is all about that. Over 20 displays of light and sound manipulating displays that I only like because they all contributed to a different view of the world or self.

I highly recommend this event for all types of groups. Family, friends and especially solo as they are all thought provoking. #NCMAhere

I do not remember the names of all of the works of art but I can describe my favorites and what I got from the top 3 for me.

  • Fire and Water man. I was drawn to this as you have to observe this display by glancing watching both sides of the wall. One side shows a man transforming into fire sort of and the other side is the man transforming into a downpour of water. It evokes the emotions placed on us by society such as fire invoking aggression, anger frustration or maybe a feeling of no return (after a thing has been burned). The other side feels cool to watch but still urgent as the water goes from a drip to a monsoon. You know that I love rain so I was more drawn to the water side. One interpretations is a base level of choosing sides. While in a round about way it can a show of you are, or who you are at the moment by noting which side did you pay attention to more.

  • Music Men in the Snowy Mountains. This one deals with sight and sound. Its a five screen display of two men composing a song in the mountains. This one is best observed standing in the center of the room. However if you try to watch it all from the entrance of the room you may have a different view of whats happening. You may observe the men putting the sounds together by syncing time and circumstance. Or you may hear the music but pay more attention to the situation in which the music is being performed. The mountain where in some views they are in the middle of nothing. One screen shows one man walking leagues away from his friend who’s playing the piano. By the end of the video, the guy walking is a black spec on the screen with a trail of snow noting his path. Another video about manipulated perspective.

  • Light Of Life. The infinite space that may make you a little apprehensive about who else is in your space. I felt, subjected or like I intruded by accident into someone else room when I peaked into the infinite room. The changing colorful lights draw you in and its beautiful. It’s transformed perception. So why did I feel subjected. It was just a shock. For a moment all you notice is the pretty lights and in another moment you notice there are other heads peaking in  and multiplying all around you. Hardly anyone notices their own face multiplying in the infinite space.

As I said it is definitely an exhibit I recommend as it is all interactive in a way. Even though you can take videos or photos of some of the exhibits, the interaction with them all is worth it.

Note: Pay attention to the map and list they give when you go. I was so busy enjoying some of them that I forgot one. I’m going back to experience the large room with the 30+ speakers in the round. I HAVE TO!
