So many people are up in a roar about Jaden Smith being styled in a skirt for the Louis Vuitton Women’s Wear Ad Campaign. I say its a good thing.
Jaden has been noted to be an influential teen who has tackled topics and expressed himself in ways that will leave you thinking and rethinking the most common things. Being somewhat of a maverick, even among his generation, Jaden has proven to be consistent in his eclectic self expression. More notably so when it comes to disregarding the comfort of the gender roles many are accustom to. He embodies the idea of forget what they think. If anything can be said, it is that he has proven that even a child/teen can be taught and put into action consistency and self confidence, even when his peers may think negatively about his image. That is what style is all about. Its self-awareness and confidence; two things we tend to not develop wholesomely until adult hood. Besides, what other male his age is getting ad contracts with a brand like that?
We’ve seen designers do crazy things on the runway for years for publicity. We also know that this generation is the generation who has successfully put the phrase “do you” in action without the residual feelings (that may stem from their true opinions.) There are so many people who rage about equality and self expression, not to mention the millions of people who tried to make the brand’s decision as something from the gay agenda. (eye roll) However, I don’t think that has anything to do with it. It’s not about race or being gay or homophobia. Its about understanding the tide, trend and inspiration the times have embraced in fashion.
I think if you are having a fit about him being in a skirt at this point, then I don’t expect you to be at the for gender equality meeting. Think about it, him being in a skirt, your son, brother or father being in a skirt changes what? No more than your daughter, mother, or sister rocking baggy pants, timberland boots, the boyfriend shirt, a pair of Jordans (which look exactly like the mens) or a close cut like Amber Rose. It changes nothing.
Here are two post from lead designer Nicholas Esquiere’s IG and some of the comments. What are your thoughts?
