In mastering your personal style, you will come to understand what is too much or what works well,in terms of the details in your look. Don’t fear to venture out from the millions of rules of fashion. There is a way to create a cohesive look with a lot of details.
By details, I’m referring to anything in your outfit that would either draw attention to itself (like something that sparkles or moves a lot) or any subtle thing that adds to the uniqueness of a complete look (something like distress cuts or mesh or a houndstooth print.)
More than print, I love accessories. However, accessorizing an outfit is one of the easiest ways to tip the scale to too much or not enough, so here are some things I keep in mind when I want the look to be on 10 and not have so much drawback as to how many details I want present in a look.
- The details should be a part of the color palette. An easy on the eyes color palette is normally three or four complimentary colors or three colors and one pattern. If you are using more than one pattern then it should be composed of those three colors. If you are using a lot of accessories, pick one color from the palette and let all the accessories be of that one color.
- Have a simple base. A visually simple background. Since we are talking about having a lot details, don’t overwhelm the entire look with details everywhere. Choose an aspect of the outfit to be very simple. In this featured look, Im wearing a solid white shirt and white jeans. The solid white is a background to the accessories, the black jacket, and black boots. Monochrome looks are a great way to pull of a look with a lot details.
- Stick to a theme. To keep from looking like you threw on everything you had, stick to a theme or single texture. In this look, I chose gold metallic as my expressed detail. So you will see gold metallic in the jacket zipper, necklace, bracelets. Avoid mixing textures when you are already wearing a lot of pieces.
The take away is, to make a look cohesive when there are a lot part or pieces to it; make some part of the outfit very simple.
Thanks to my friend DeAan Pridgeon for shooting this look. Check out his work by clicking this line.
